Fingle Woods

About this route

Fingle Woods stretches along 10 km of the rugged Teign Valley, on the northern edge of Dartmoor.

Visitors can explore 45 km of newly created trails, enjoy breathtaking views, and uncover the area’s rich history. The woods offer sun-dappled glades, abundant wildlife, and fascinating woodland archaeology. Keen eyes may catch the flash of a kingfisher’s iridescent blue as it darts along the banks of the River Fingle, which flows and sparkles through the forest. The rhythmic tapping of a woodpecker or the splash of an otter might be heard among the trees. Seasonal wildflowers, such as ramsons, wood anemones, wild daffodils, and bluebells – create ever-changing displays of colour, adding to the woodland’s enchanting atmosphere.

Comprising eight distinct woods, the site is jointly owned and managed by the National Trust and Woodland Trust.  As part of one of their most ambitious woodland restoration efforts, they are working to restore Fingle Woods to health, returning it to a thriving haven for both nature and people.
