Explore Okehampton Area with the Dartmoor Sunday Rail Service

Normal service will resume this weekend on the Okehampton Sunday Dartmoor Service. For the last five Sundays, there have been speed restrictions on the rail line between Coleford Junction and Okehampton but these have now been lifted and the Summer  Sunday Service between Exeter and Okehampton, operated by GWR and funded by Devon County Council, will return to the normal timetable from this Sunday, 9th July.

So why not take advantage of the good weather and have a day out the northern part of Dartmoor.  Start your day on a relaxing and scenic train ride from Exeter or Crediton and on arrival at Okehampton try this short walk of three to four miles devised by Ernest Bassett, a local man who was a great lover of Dartmoor which also takes in the town or a slightly longer walk of five miles starting at Meldon reservoir and taking in the splendour of the Victorian feats of engineering including Meldon Viaduct.

Alternatively, if you’re feeling more energetic, why not have your bike with you on the train, and take a spin along the Granite Way to Lyford where you could visit Lydford Castle or Lydford Gorge
